IKWRO and Not Shut Up

IKWRO’s (Iranian and Kurdish Women Rights Organisation) mission is to protect Middle Eastern and Afghan women and girls who are at risk of ‘honour’ based violence, forced marriage, child marriage, female genital mutilation and domestic violence and to promote their rights.

Not Shut Up is a quarterly national magazine celebrating creativity in a range of custodial settings – prisons, secure hospitals, refugee centres, children’s homes and the like, all across the UK.

As with Southall Black Sisters, Giants worked with IKWRO and Not Shut Up to help develop ideas for Piece of Silk. One theme they all kept coming back to was the idea of storytelling as a matter of life or death.

After a day-long workshop exploring this theme, Giants devised a piece with IKWRO and Not Shut Up that was then performed by spoken word artist, Sonny Green and drama students India Shaw-Smith and Jeremy Neumark Jones before an invited audience at ASC Studio, Southwark.

Please note that the following video of Storytelling Is A Matter of Life and Death contains swearing and stories of a sexual nature.
